Alumni Ordination Feature: Deacon Joseph Wappes ’20

Meet Deacon Joseph Wappes (SJV ’20) from the Archdiocese of St. Paul & Minneapolis!
Biggest anticipated part of Ordination Day?
I greatly look forward to the anointing of the hands with Chrism. It is such a tangible symbol of God’s call for me to bring His healing and love to the world — through the Sacraments and prayer.
Most looking forward to in the Priesthood?
Being involved in people’s lives: entering into their joys and struggles, and bringing God’s presence to them.
What do you miss the most from SJV?
Two things, in particular: 1) The morning Holy Hour of Adoration together, and 2) the many good friends I spent those years with at SJV!
Currently reading?
John Steinbeck’s East of Eden — a beautiful novel about the reality of life outside the Garden of Eden, taking place in the 20th century American West. It contains beautiful themes of brotherhood, a father’s role, and family.
How did SJV prepare you for what’s coming next?
My time at SJV introduced me to my identity as a son of the Father, which has become the rock in my life. I learned also that this identity has to be continually discovered and deepened in daily prayer, which I know will be what sustains me in priestly ministry.
Favorite part of summer?
I love going to a baseball game and going fishing!
Please pray for Deacon Wappes as he prepares for Presbyteral Ordination on May 25, 2024 and for all of our alumni who will be ordained this spring!
